You can easily see this plot happening in the time period it is written about. It is very brutal and heartbreaking at times, which makes this one something that is hard to stop reading. Although it is written about Jacob and Sarah, the story is mainly about Sarah, who is a young French girl that goes through a lot starting in the first few chapters. The good news is that she learns fast how to adapt, so she can’t be kept down for long. There are a lot of people to keep track of in this book, which had me confused at times, so you may have to go back on occasion and check on who the characters are. Besides that, I enjoyed learning a few things about France and a few expressions as well. It is a story that isn’t easy to read, but it is worthwhile to get through.
